Gobi Argali

The Gobi Desert was a natural moat between Mongolia and the sedentary civilizations of northern China. Genghis Khan used it as a defensive buffer, a staging zone for invasions, and a filter that slowed enemies but not his  Mongol cavalry.

It was too dry and harsh for long-term encampments and yet it remains the natural home of a prized Argali species – the Gobi Argali.

Specie / Hunt Description

The mass and length of some specimens can push against the lower edge of the Hangai size range, but a Gobi ram of 50-51 is considered a most magnificent trophy. A ram in the lower to mid-40s to high-40s is a solid benchmark average.

Development, particularly in the form of the expansion of mining in the Gobi Desert, has narrowed prime Gobi Argali to some very specific pockets where rams have refuge. Knowing where to hunt them today requires much more vigilance and real-time understanding of what areas hold good rams. Hunt prices reflect both market demand and the cost of limited permits in the best areas.

Getting There: Hunters will be met in Ulaanbaatar and assisted with firearms clearance. Depending on flight arrival times, hunters will either overnight or connect directly to the hunting area. Some areas are accessible with a connecting flight while comfortable SUVs are used to access other areas.

Hunt Strategy: Hangai terrain is generally a mix of mountainous ankle-high grassland and craggy outcroppings. SUVs are used to cover territory with frequent stops for glassing known Hangai hangouts and movement patterns. Most sheep are taken roughly between 2,300-3,000 meters (approx. 7,000 -10,000 ft.). Shots are typically long – from 350-550 meters (approx. 400-600 yds.) on average.

Season: July-September. Our guides apply time-tested hunt strategies for temperatures and seasonal patterns of movement during the entire season.

Length of Hunt: 9-day hunt including in-country travel days.

Options: Various combination hunts with Gobi Argali are possible, including one or more of the three other Argali species (Northern, High Altai, and Hangai) as well as with Maral stag, Gobi Ibex, and Altai Ibex. Please inquire about individual and combination hunt options in Mongolia.
