Astor Markhor

Astor Markhor hunting in the Gilgit–Baltistan concessions of Pakistan is one of the most demanding, prestigious, and culturally distinctive mountain hunts on Earth.

What sets it apart is the combination of extreme terrain, tight permit quotas (4 exportable trophies annually), deep community involvement, and the unique biology of the flare‑horned markhor itself.

Specie / Hunt Description

About 80% of revenue supports anti-poaching efforts, and the building of schools, clinics, and community development, creating one of the highest success-rate conservation models in Asia. Success is 95% on outstanding trophies that average 55–65″ in length. An Astor in any trophy room certainly makes a statement about the strength of a hunter’s desire.

Getting There: Hunters will be met in Islamabad and assisted with firearms clearance. Depending on flight arrival times, hunters will either overnight or connect directly to the hunting area by SUV.

Hunt Strategy: Astor Markhor country is arid, vertical, and unforgiving — a mix of limestone cliffs, sparsely wooded slopes, and broken escarpments. This is classic Markhor terrain: steep, fractured, and visually open — the classic context for long-range glassing and shooting and physically demanding.

Astor Markhor hunts are community-managed, deeply traditional, and extremely well‑organized. Local hunters locate trophy billies before the client arrives.

Shots range from 350-550 meters (approx. 400-600 yds.) on average but preparing for longer shots could be beneficial when time and distance limit options for getting closer.

Season: November through March with the rut peaking in December. Late-season hunts (Feb–Mar) grow tougher as animals climb again, but success rates remain high due to pre-scouting and community knowledge. Our guides apply time-tested hunt strategies for temperatures and seasonal patterns of movement during the entire season.

Length of Hunt: 5-day hunt plus 3-4 in-country travel days.

Options: A diverse range of other species can also be combined with Astor Markhor  –  Sindh Ibex, Blanford Urial, Punjab Urial, Afghan Urial, Chinkara Gazelle, and other Markhors. These species are found in different areas across the country and our expert team on the ground in Pakistan arranges a custom logistical plan for seamless permits and transport to all the relevant areas to be hunted.
