The Bezoar Ibex is regarded as the ancestral wild goat of Eurasia, with the Coastal strain representing a distinctive form found along Turkey’s Mediterranean and Aegean mountain ranges. Unlike the more eastern and Anatolian populations, these ibex are shaped by a different ecotype and the unique environments they inhabit.
The Bezoar Ibex (Capra aegagrus aegagrus) is the ancestral wild goat of Eurasia, but the Coastal strain—found along Turkey’s Mediterranean and Aegean mountain arcs—differs from the Eastern/Anatolian populations in several ways. Ecotype is different, and they occupy the rugged limestone escarpments, cliff bands, and broken pine‑maquis slopes overlooking the Mediterranean.
Elevations typically 1,000–2,000 meters (3,280–6,560 ft). Terrain is steep, fractured, and vegetatively complex—less open than Eastern Anatolia’s alpine bowls. But it’s hard to imagine a more beautiful setting to hunt such a grand member of Capra.
Getting There: Hunters will be met in Ankara or Antalya or other city closest to the hunting area and assisted with firearms clearance. Reaching the hunting area by road is usually very short (1-2 hrs.).
Hunting Strategy: Coastal ibex are exceptionally alert, using vegetation and broken rock to vanish instantly. They move vertically more than horizontally—classic cliff‑dwelling behavior. Rutting battles are dramatic, with billies fighting on steep faces. A good series of forestry roads enable deep penetration into the hunt areas to access promising glassing spots. Careful glassing and marksmanship are success factors. Glassing → walking → glassing → stalking (classic mountain rhythm) is required.
Shots average between 250-400 meters (approx. 275-425 yds.) on average.
Season: The season extends from August 1 through March 31. Mid-November to early January is prime time (rut) but February/March are also excellent.
Length of Hunt: 4-day hunt plus 2 in-country travel days.
Options: Various species can be combined with Coastal Ibex, including Konya Mouflon, Bezoar Ibex, Hybrid Ibex, Anatolian Chamois, Mid-Eastern Red Deer, and Wild Boar (the world’s largest).
