The large-bodied and massively antlered Chukotka Moose inhabit the Kamchatka Peninsula and Magadan in strong numbers. Many hunters choose to hunt Russia for a big moose because success is much higher and the cost is much lower than high-quality hunts in Alaska.
We hunt them in Magadan and on the Kamchatka Peninsula and can advise what destination is a better fit to match your objectives and timing.
Getting There: As with the hunts for brown bear in Russia, given the current array of economic sanctions affecting air travel options into Russia, our hunters travel to Moscow via Istanbul and take a flight to Petropavlovsk the next day for hunts on Kamchatka or to Magadan. We take the complexity our of flight planning and hunt payments.
Hunt Strategy: During September, these are classic mountain spot and stalk hunting, sometimes aided by horseback during the peak of the rut. November – December hunts are conducted using snow machines. Average shooting distance is 100– 300 yards.
Kamchatka camps are comfortable but rustic and sometimes quite basic. The Magadan camp is a modern facility with several amenities.
Season: Moose can be hunted in the Fall season (September) but prime time is November-December in both destinations.
Length of Hunt: 8 hunting days plus travel time, about 14 in total.
Options / Major Species: It is possible to combine Chukotka Moose with Brown Bear in the Fall on Kamchatka, but this must be considered carefully compared to hunting Moose during prime time in November – December and Brown Bear during prime time in the Spring.
The hunt in Magada offers a combination with Reindeer, similar to the big mountain caribou of Northwest Territories.
